One option during a wedding ceremony is to quote song lyrics. Here are some of my favorite romantic lyrics:
“Thank You” – Led Zeppelin, writers Robert Plant, Jimmy Page
If the sun refused to shine,
I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea,
There will still be you and me.
Kind woman, I give you my all.
Kind woman, nothing more.
Little drops of rain
Whisper of the pain.
Tears of love lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong,
With you there is no wrong.
Together we shall go until we die.
“Lady in Red” – Chris De Burgh (singer and writer)
I’ve never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight,
I’ve never seen you shine so bright,
I’ve never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance,
They’re looking for a little romance, given half a chance,
And I have never seen that dress you’re wearing,
Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes,
I have been blind;
The lady in red is dancing with me, cheek to cheek,
There’s nobody here, it’s just you and me,
It’s where I want to be,
But I hardly know this beauty by my side,
I’ll never forget the way you look tonight.
“Someone Somewhere in Summertime” – Simple Minds, writers Derek Forbes, James Kerr, Charles Burchill, Michael Joseph Mac Neil
Somewhere there is some place, that one million eyes can’t see
And somewhere there is someone, who can see what I can see
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” – Elvis Presley, writers Luigi Creatore, Hugo Peretti, George Weiss
Like a river flows
Surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand,
Take my whole life, too
For I can’t help falling in love with you
“Entre Nous” – Rush, writers: Geddy Lee, Neil Peart, Alex Lifeson
We are secrets to each other
Each one’s life a novel
No one else has read
Even joined in bonds of love
We’re linked to one another
By such slender threads
We are planets to each other
Drifting in our orbits
To a brief eclipse
Each of us a world apart
Alone and yet together
Like two passing ships
Just between us
I think it’s time for us to recognize
The differences we sometimes fear to show
Just between us
I think it’s time for us to realize
The spaces in between
Leave room for you and I to grow
Now, with apologies to Geddy Lee and the guys, grammatically it should be “Leave room for you and me to grow,” but otherwise the sentiment is wonderful, especially when two families don’t really support the bond. Two people might not have a lot in common, but they find each other and have the optimism that the room between them allows room for them to grow together — that can beat any doubts the families might have.
